Month 1: Get Clear on the Numbers

Know exactly where you stand

List every debt you owe

Name, balance, interest rate, and minimum payment for each. Use the Debt Tracker tab above.

Calculate your monthly income vs expenses

Write down every ringgit coming in and going out. Even estimates are fine to start.

Find your “debt attack” money

Identify at least RM 100–300/month you can redirect to extra debt payments (cancel subscriptions, eat out less).

Choose a payoff strategy

Avalanche: pay highest interest first (saves most money). Snowball: pay smallest balance first (best for motivation).

Set up automatic minimum payments

Never miss a payment. Automate the minimums so you’re never charged late fees again.

💡 Key insight: Most people don’t know their exact debt total. Writing it all down — even if it’s scary — is the single most powerful first step.

Months 2–3: Attack Your Debt

Build the habit and the momentum
0/4
Make your first extra payment

Even RM 50 extra on your target debt counts. Starting beats optimising.

Call your lenders to negotiate interest rates

Many banks will lower rates if you ask, especially if you’ve been a good customer. A 1–2% reduction adds up fast.

Look into balance transfer options

Some credit cards offer 0% balance transfer promos for 6–12 months. This can save significant interest.

Review and cut 3 recurring expenses

Streaming services, gym memberships, food delivery subscriptions — redirect this to debt.

💡 Key insight: Every ringgit of extra payment saves you money on future interest. RM 200/month extra on a 18% credit card saves you thousands over time.

Months 2–4: Start Growing Your Income

List your top 3 marketable skills

What can you do that others would pay for? Writing, design, tutoring, driving, cooking, repairs?

Pick ONE income stream to start

Don’t split your energy. Choose the fastest path to RM — check the Income Ideas tab for inspiration.

Earn your first extra ringgit

Even RM 20 from a side hustle changes your identity. “I am someone who earns extra income.”

Ask for a raise or explore a better-paying job

Research market salaries on Jobstreet or LinkedIn. If you’re underpaid, now is the time to negotiate or move.

Direct ALL extra income to debt first

Every bonus, side hustle payment, and windfall goes straight to your debt target. No exceptions for 6 months.

💡 Key insight: Cutting expenses has a floor. Earning more has no ceiling. Both matter, but income growth is where real acceleration happens.
🔄

Months 4–6: Build Systems

Make progress automatic
0/4
Set a monthly “money date” with yourself

30 minutes every month to review progress, adjust the plan, and celebrate wins.

Automate your extra debt payment

Set a standing instruction to transfer extra funds to debt right on payday. You can’t spend what’s already gone.

Scale your side income

Whatever worked in months 2–3, do more of it. Raise your rates, take on more clients, or systematise it.

Celebrate a debt milestone

When you pay off a full debt or hit 25% of your goal, celebrate in a way that doesn’t cost much. You earned it.

💡 Key insight: Systems beat willpower every time. Once your extra payments are automatic, staying on track requires zero motivation.
🏁

Months 7–12: Accelerate & Look Ahead

Build on your wins
0/4
Use the snowball/avalanche effect

As you pay off each debt, roll that payment into the next one. The momentum compounds powerfully.

Start a small emergency fund alongside debt payoff

Aim for RM 1,000–2,000 set aside. This stops new debt from forming when surprises happen.

Diversify your income to 2 streams

Once your first side income is stable, add a second one. Options: freelancing, passive income, investments.

Write your 12-month financial review

How much debt did you pay off? How much did your income grow? What’s next? Write it all down.

💡 Key insight: By month 12, you won’t just have less debt — you’ll have better financial habits, more income, and a system that keeps working.
