THE TRUE COST OF ARMAMENT

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”
— President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Behind Every Statistic — A Name
Since 2001, over 7,000 U.S. service members have died in post-9/11 wars. Each left behind parents, spouses, and children. This does not calculate what their lives were “worth” — it honors the ripple of grief each death sends through a family.
The average U.S. soldier killed in combat was 26 years old. Behind each death: an average of 2.1 children left fatherless or motherless, a spouse facing decades alone, parents who outlive their child. 20 veterans die by suicide every day — ~30,000 since 9/11, four times the combat death toll.

The Spouse
A military widow averages 34 years old at the time of loss — facing 40+ years raising children alone. 1 in 5 Gold Star spouses develop severe depression within the first year. Survivor benefits replace only a fraction of lost household income.

The Children
An estimated 25,000 children lost a parent in post-9/11 wars. They face higher rates of anxiety, depression, and academic failure. Grief resurfaces at every milestone — graduation, a wedding, the birth of their own child.

The Parents
Gold Star parents carry some of the highest rates of complicated grief disorder of any bereaved group. Roughly 60% of Gold Star mothers report their marriage suffered significantly. No loss defies nature more than burying your own child.

The Wounded
For every soldier killed, roughly 8 are wounded — many with TBI, amputations, PTSD, or moral injury. Lifetime care costs for a severely wounded veteran can exceed $2 million. The VA serves 9 million enrolled veterans and remains chronically underfunded.
