“And hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous.”1

This verse encourages believers to seek Allah’s forgiveness quickly and strive for the eternal reward of Paradise. It emphasizes the importance of being proactive in seeking forgiveness and engaging in righteous deeds.

Seeking forgiveness in Islam is a profound and multi-faceted process. Here are some key ways to seek forgiveness:

  1. Tawbah (Repentance): This involves feeling genuine remorse for your sins, ceasing the sinful behavior immediately, and making a firm intention not to return to the sin. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin”1.
  2. Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness): Regularly ask Allah for forgiveness through prayers and supplications. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to seek forgiveness from Allah more than seventy times a day1.
  3. Performing Good Deeds: Engaging in good deeds can help erase sins. Allah says in the Quran, “Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds” (Surah Hud, 11:114)1.
  4. Making Dua (Supplication): Ask Allah for forgiveness and guidance in your prayers. Sincere supplication can bring you closer to Allah and help cleanse your heart1.
  5. Seeking Forgiveness from Others: If your actions have harmed others, seek their forgiveness and make amends. This is an important step in the process of repentance1.
  6. Enduring Hardships with Patience: Sometimes, enduring difficulties and suffering can also be a means of expiation for sins1

The characteristics of the righteous in this verse are further explained in the following verse, Surah Al-Imran, Ayah 134, which mentions that the righteous are those who:

  • Spend in charity during times of ease and hardship.
  • Control their anger.
  • Forgive the faults of others.

In other words, the righteous are those who always strive to do good and maintain good relationships with Allah and fellow human beings.

Incorporating these practices into your life can help you seek forgiveness and strengthen your relationship with Allah.
